We've all been kind of hunkered down and hiding in the closet, hoping the monster won't smell us. These random firings have revealed the self-censorship to be a mistake. If these incompetent oligarchs are just firing people based on some arbitrary dates on eOPM form SF-50 then what difference does it make if I poke them on Substack. They certainly deserve the poke good and hard.
Hey, on a less angry topic do y'all keep chickens? The most exciting thing about this beer vaccine idea is that it's so low tech a person with reasonable kitchen skills can pretty much practice the art themselves. I'm getting set up to do experiments with lab chickens across campus, but if I get randomly shitcanned (sigh... there's that pesky anger again) I may start showing up on the barn doorsteps of local farms.
No chickens here. Grapes are trouble enough. Our neighbors have chickens and they migrate over daily to poop in our lawn, so if the ax does fall, that’s one doorstep for you.
Perhaps it’s time for EM to pay back all the govt. grant dollars he’s received to develop Tesla and SpaceX? And Trump to reimburse with interest all the money his daddy siphoned off from grants to build new housing?
Yeah - government contract welfare queens telling me my work is a waste of tax dollars just adds to the gall. OK. Channeling my inner MLK. So tired of having these hypocritical clowns occupying valuable space in my mind rent free.
Hi Chris, sorry to hear that colleagues of yours were victims of the purge. Just like everyone in life sciences in Europe, I can't believe what is going in the states at the moment. It almost seems like the Trump administration has an active hatred for science, and just wants to destroy the whole biomedical ecosystem in the US. Now is indeed the time for a new FDR!
I share the sense of unreality - and I deeply appreciate the sympathy.
While the administration clearly hates some abstract strawman conception of lazy liberal government workers, I wouldn't go so far as to say they hate science. Instead, it looks like they're trying to make things run more efficiently but they're unable to see how abjectly incompetent they are at it. It could be ketamine, it could be lack of sleep, it could be childhood lead exposure, it could be a sandwich bag worth of nanoplastics sprinkled throughout their brains. Or it could be the terrifying fulfilment of the Honigsbaum prophecy:
In a way, Honigsbaum would be perverse good news - because it would imply that widespread adoption of safer/cheaper/faster yeast vaccines could help beat back the dumbpocalypse.
Was hoping for an update like this.

So good!!
